William's Story

Life Everything considered, my life is just fine right know. This December, I will have married to the same sweet wonderful woman Beth, for 39 years and she has blessed me with three, now grown children; Janie, 37 years old, Andrew, soon to be 33 years old and Lacey, 27 years old. We have lived in 6 different states since I originally went to work for Ashland Oil, now Marathon Petroleum LLC since the merger 12 years ago. With the exception on one year when we lived in Tennessee on a special assignment, the last 26 years have been in the State of Minnesota. We live in the Twin City suburb of Lakeville not to far from the Mall of America, the largest shopping center in the country. It's quite the tourist attraction and during the Christmas season, it's not unusual for over 200,000 people to be in the Mall, but not me because I hate crowds! Minnesota is a nice place to live but because of the politics and winter weather, a place I don't plan to retire. We have had winters so cold that my car tires have actually frozen to the pavement, a glass of warm water can be thrown out of the front door and turn to ice crystals before hitting the ground and tears can freeze in your eyes while shoveling snow if not wearing goggles. Other than that, it's a great time when the snow covers the ground from November to mid May. We have a very short golf season, June through September but it's long enough since I had back surgery in 1997 after falling on my driveway while snow blowing my driveway. I still try and play when I can and there are a number of great courses here in spite of the short season. My Mother and Father are both gone, my Dad lived with us for 4 years until h...Expand for more
e passed away in 2003. Always called Minnesota, a "foreign country" and missed Atlanta more than I ever have. My Brother lives in Arkansas and has had the tragedy of loosing two wives very young to cancer. All in all things are as they should be and I would not change much if I had the chance but feel blessed to have had such a good life up to now. College I graduated from Ga Tech on my second try with a BS in Biology. I received a AS degree in Emergency Medical Technology from Dekalb Community College and was the first certified person in the State of Georgia to receive an advanced emergency medical technician diploma while working as a paramedic at Grady Memorial Hospital I also earned a BA degree in Business Management from Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minnesota Workplace I worked as a advanced EMT for three years in Atlanta at Gardy Hospital and in Broward County, Florida ( Ft. Lauderdale). I have worked for the last 33 years for a petroleum refining company, Marathon Ashland Petroleum where I'm currently the Divisional Manager, Northern Region for the Heavy Products Group at our refinery in St. Paul Park, Minnesota. The marketing area I manage, sells over 130 million gallons of petroleum products each year generating over $90 million dollars of sales revenue for the company. My region is second in sales volume only to our Detroit refinery, where the regional office is located. Marathon Petroleum Company LLC is the 5th largest domestic oil company, but the second largest domestic refiner, processing over 1 million barrels of crude a day through 7 refineries located in Texas, Louisana, Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky.
